In May 1972, the Rolling Stones began a tour of the States, and Robert Greenfield, the rock journalist, went with them to record it. He's an enterprising writer, often deserting the circus itself to follow the progress of individuals brushed by its passage. He's clever too at analysing the comings and goings of the beautiful people, Mrs.Jagger among them, and his portraits of Truman Capote is as malicious as its subject. There is also a riveting section on the Stones' sojourns chez Hefner where what every ageing Playboy Club member dreams of really happens. Drama abounds. Jagger gets gaoled in Providence while, 50 miles away in Boston, the audience boils up to near riot. There's lashings of dope 'n' sex, as they used to call it in the Underground press, all described with that obligatory air of deadpan detachment... a theatrical experience.
