Madeleine Smith was never found guilty of poisoning her lover with arsenic, but there is much to suggest that this romantic Scottish figure of the last century literally got away with murder. She was certainly luckier than Oscar Slater, who had to wait nearly twenty years for a pardon after he had been convicted of a violent murder on feeble evidence. Crippen's name has gone into the language as a minor oath, so great was the notoriety of this mouse-like little London Doctor who poisoned his wife, fled with his mistress, but was caught at sea by the revolutionary speed of wireless-telegraphy. And finally this volume contains an account of the Ruxton case in which the tireless determination of the pathologists eventually exposed the cunning determination of the murderer in dismembering his two victims.
